Ernest Pickle's Remarkable Robot

Hodder Headline, Australia: 1995; 112pp
ISBN: 9780733600692
Genres: adventure, humour, science fiction
Issues: friendship, gifted
Ernest Pickle, already hampered by his name, is isolated by his genius with computers. Very definitely a gifted child, he has no friends he can count on, and a number of bullying enemies.
Ernest's solution is to build himself a computerised robot, complete with a hypnotic signal transmitter which immediately turns those who hate him into a raving fan club. Ernest finds there are certain disadvantages to being worshipped and adored but the worst is yet to come. The signal has attracted the attention of the secret service and Glen (the robot) is their target.
This is great fun to read, a wonderful piece of escapism for younger readers.
