Paris, winter, and Madeleine, brilliant and creative young cook though she is, finds her new school difficult. Being a reluctant celebrity – and a very sensitive, creative individual – makes life challenging at the best of times but when a new girl seems out to make Madeleine the butt of all her jokes, her world begins to fall apart.
Too ashamed to ask her secret Underground friends for help, Madeleine finds herself comforted by the sweet treats of Madame Bonbon. But the sweets are addictive and Madeleine soon finds that the nightmare of school is a daydream by comparison to the dark and threatening world into which Madame Bonbon drags her. Can Madeleine find a way out without betraying Madame Pamplemousse and the Taste-Automated Space-Time Deja-Vu Generator? And what will she learn about herself in the process?
The third in Rupert Kingfisher's Madame Pamplemousse series, The Enchanted Sweet Shop is another delicious mouthful for the discerning reader. Kingfisher has created a modern fairytale with a wonderful range of eccentric characters. His quirky, imaginative concepts and the unusual situations in which he places them challenge the reader's perspective on many things and celebrate those who are different for whatever reason.
Highly recommended.
