Want to encourage your children to eat healthy foods? Then join Aunty Rozzy in this bright and cheerful ode to carrots.
Inspired by her own son's attitudes towards some foods - and carrots in particular - Ros Tesoreiro wrote a song that praises the value of these orange-coloured root vegetables. Perry the Parrot (a Major Mitchell Cockatoo by the looks of him) travels widely and while visiting Paris realises that carrots in the French capital cannot equal the taste of Nanna's, so he flies back home. Harriette the Rabbit, upon hearing of Nanna's carrots, mounts her chariot to taste test them for herself. ‘Big carrots, small carrots, tall carrots, short carrots/ Everybody loves Nanna's carrots!'
While there are hesitations in the scansion of this rhyming story, carers will probably find the bouncy tune and repeated chorus good fun to share with a group of toddlers. The cartoon style illustrations are simple and colourful, lending themselves to animations in the future, perhaps.
An accompanying CD contains an audiobook and song version of the story. Be aware that the audio version does not exactly match the printed story word-for-word, which may confuse beginning readers. Aunty Rozzy's website provides support materials including games.
