Opposites attract, they say, and that is certainly the case with Pearl Barley and Charlie Parsley.
Pearl is loud and takes risks. Charlie is quiet and likes to feel safe. He prefers to sit and think while Pearl likes to be up and doing. Somehow, despite their differences - perhaps because of them - they are a comfort to each other.
This wonderful story should be shared with all children to encourage them to recognise that ‘being different' isn't a crime but a gift. This is a story that should inspire individuality: it acknowledges the pain of those who ‘don't quite fit in' and celebrates the fact that by being open to possibilities our greatest weaknesses can become our strengths.
The acrylic and mixed media illustrations have a slightly surreal feel to them but provide a strong visualization of the ‘odd couple' relationship.
Highly recommended.
