This very simple text powerfully evokes both the military and personal nature of Anzac Day.
A child watches her grandfather march - ‘He remembers when they were young. He remembers when he was young. He marches for all his friends who can't march. He marches for us...He marches to remember them.' The double page illustrations (acrylic on board) are slightly cartoonish but the oversized faces convey a remarkable range of emotions - sadness, pride, respect and love.
Above all, this is a book about connections and remembering - our history, those who have lost their lives serving their country, those who live their lives serving our nation. As the little girl says: ‘One day I will march on Anzac Day, and I will do the remembering.'
