ABC Local Radio with Parents of Gifted Children
ABC Local Radio Brisbane published on 3 Apr 2008 a 50 minute Conversation Hour podcast "Parents of Gifted Children", with three NSWAGTC parents Helen Dudeney, Scott Page and Lara Fitzgerald. If you're a parent, and you detect any skerrick of talent in your child, it's hard not to reach out and grab the word "gifted". And why not? We all know that praise is good for kids and it's natural to feel pride when your darling does long division for the first time, or identifies a rare form of lichen on the side of a tree!
But what about the children who are truly and seriously gifted? Children who apparently suck up vast amounts of information at a very early age and figure out how to put it together? What is life like for them, and for their parents? Bringing up a gifted child is an immensely challenging experience, managing their thirst for knowledge whilst trying to keep them happy and fulfilled -and also ensuring their school experience is one that helps them thrive.
Helen Dudeney's gifted daughter Joanne is now 23. Helen runs a gifted education consultancy, through which she counsels gifted children and their families. Scott Page's 5 year old son Toby was officially "identified" as gifted this year, so as a family they're still learning what it all means and how to manage it. Lara Fitzgerald's gifted son Tom is 7 -and she thinks her 3 year old daughter may be following in her brother's footsteps!
