Well it's week 3 (teachers always talk in "weeks") and classes are beginning to "gel". In my case, it is fascinating to watch the dynamics of having several gifted students in one room. Already, I can see the spark of "like minds" finding each other. Not just in discussions - but over the chess board, at the art table, over the wrestling swap cards (!) I'm enjoying the level of thinking displayed in our discussions. We use the method often used in "philosophy for kids" of throwing a ball to the next speaker. Only the person holding the ball speaks, which keeps everyone on track. We are writing several different text types each week, rather than focusing on one or two, which gives me great scope for introducing current affairs to the English curriculum. I've differentiated the HSIE unit using the Williams model, which facilitates higher order thinking. My challenge - keeping up the pace. Their challenge - working at the top of Blooms taxonomy, wearing their green thinking hat , and unwittingly teaching me a lot more about gifted and talented children.Just in...

Gifted children vary a lot. Some are great at sports. Some have disabilities. Children can be gifted or not along one or more of a large number of dimensions. Labels like "gifted" need to be used carefully as all children are different. |
NSWAGTC Blogs
The blogs appearing on the NSWAGTC site are designed to provide colour, news and subjective views about the many issues and concerns facing gifted children and their parents, care-givers and educators. Some of the blogs are associated with formal roles of the NSWAGTC, such as the President and the Webmaster. These allow the persons filling these roles to note to members any current news and changes. Other NSWAGTC blogs are written by individuals with experience of gifted children from one or more perspectives - for example Cate's Blog is from the viewpoint of a primary school teacher and parent of gifted children. These blogs are written solely by the person identified and represent his or her views, rather than necessarily those of the NSWAGTC.
