Toys and calculators

Sam's love of all things number related can become very tricky in social situations.

Sam generally has very low interest in eating or feeding himself. So at the family get together in Melbourne, all the little cousins sat at the table and ate...except Sam.

We then gave Sam a calculator to play with, after which he was open to eating. Saying "...Sam loves calculators...." in front of the other parents..... well, it may be true, but it doesn't go down well ..... (Hugo wouldn't eat till he was allowed to wear his batman cape, and his parents gave him that. It's probably the same thing, but bribing Sam with a calculator doesn't get the same smiles).

So no more calculators for dinner. I've been trying other techniques... no toys (calculators, maths books, computers) till after you eat your dinner, sit at the table for hours till you eat your dinner, go to bed without dinner, funny shapes, logical explanations of why we eat ... but nothing seems to work (yet).

Then I thought more about how Sam sees the world. I made him mince and shaped that into a large 8, put mash in the top circle of the 8, and filled the bottom circle with veggies. Sam looooved his 8! He kept saying "mummy made you an 8! Mummy made you an 8!" (he still mixes up his pronouns) and he was so happy. He ate at least half the meal by himself!

Having fussy toddlers is probably something many parents have to manage. ...   15 year old boys don't go on a date and have their mother's there feeding them! So I know his eating will improve some time.... I'd just like it to be sooner.....

NSWAGTC Blogs

The blogs appearing on the NSWAGTC site are designed to provide colour, news and subjective views about the many issues and concerns facing gifted children and their parents, care-givers and educators.

Some of the blogs are associated with formal roles of the NSWAGTC, such as the President and the Webmaster. These allow the persons filling these roles to note to members any current news and changes.

Other NSWAGTC blogs are written by individuals with experience of gifted children from one or more perspectives - for example Cate's Blog is from the viewpoint of a primary school teacher and parent of gifted children. These blogs are written solely by the person identified and represent his or her views, rather than necessarily those of the NSWAGTC.

Comments are invited

We invite comments on our blog entries, by both financial members and registered users (free). Click here to register. Comments may be reviewed and those considered inappropriate will be deleted.

New blogs?

We would also be delighted to consider applications from potential bloggers provided that the applicant accepts that this will be subject to a review process and may well be declined for any number of reasons which may not be shared with the applicant. Applications, which should include a resume and a vision for the potential blog, and suggestions for new blogs, can be sent in the first instance to the webmaster.
